Indianapolis International Airport boasts the world's second-largest FedEx Express hub. Driven by the need to accommodate steady growth in e-commerce activity, FedEx Express is undergoing a massive expansion of their Ground Support Equipment (GSE) staging area and wide-body aircraft apron. CHA is providing ongoing program development, engineering design, construction administration, and construction observation services.
The planned GSE staging area expansion covers approximately 38 acres of site development, while the wide-body aircraft apron expansion spans roughly 75 acres. CHA has effectively collaborated with FedEx to establish design schedules that accommodate critical program deadlines. This involved identifying long lead items and critical construction scheduling in close partnership with FedEx and the contractor. These collaborative efforts have allowed CHA to continue design work concurrently with construction, ensuring FedEx meets its completion deadlines. Additionally, CHA's strong relationship with the Indianapolis Airport Authority facilitated timely approval of safety, phasing plans, and work permits, enabling FedEx to seamlessly integrate the expansion into sort operations as project phases conclude. The expansion significantly enhances FedEx Express hub's package-handling capacity and physical footprint at Indianapolis International Airport.
The project includes 113 acres of site development.
The facility is the world's 2nd largest FedEx Express hub.
