Knickerbacker Ice Rink Returns with CHA's Expertise

Posted February 12, 2025

The Knickerbacker Ice Rink in Troy, New York, celebrated its grand reopening on Friday, January 10, 2025. CHA Consulting, Inc. (CHA) served as the Engineer of Record for this project, which involved extensive ice rink slab and refrigeration repairs, marking a significant milestone for the community.

The reopening of the Knickerbacker Ice Rink, which had been without ice for six years, reflects the strategic investment of the City of Troy’s funds and Rensselaer County's federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds into local infrastructure. This collaborative effort highlights the commitment to revitalizing local infrastructure and providing valuable recreational facilities for residents.

CHA performed the full design upgrades for the ice rink, including the installation of a new air-cooled outdoor 200-ton (nominal) ice rink chiller utilizing 35% ethylene glycol as the ice-making fluid. The project also involved removing the existing rink slab and underfloor piping, as well as replacing the old water-cooled chiller and evaporative condenser.

Knickerbacker Park, where the rink is located, is owned by Thomas A. and Helen L. Knickerbacker Memorial Playgrounds Inc. The City of Troy, which closed the arena in January 2018 due to ice-making issues, has now successfully revitalized this beloved facility, originally built in 1990 and dedicated in 1991.
